The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday gave two of its medicines, Viagra and Cialis, an additional drug to treat erectile dysfunction, in a letter to physicians.
The FDA's warning letter to health care professionals said the Food and Drug Administration has not identified the drug that was most effective in treating erectile dysfunction and said the agency does not consider that the drug works for people with heart problems.
In a separate letter to health care professionals, the agency said it has identified several of the drugs that are most effective in treating erectile dysfunction. One of those drugs, Viagra, has been withdrawn from the market because of safety concerns. The others are Levitra, Cialis and Vardenafil.
"We do not recommend that any of these products be used," Dr. Steven Nissen, a urologist at Northwestern University in Chicago, said in a statement.
The drug is not approved for use by men who have diabetes.
"This is not an FDA-approved use of sildenafil," Nissen said in a statement. "However, it's important to note that sildenafil has a lower risk of causing diabetes-related vision loss than nitrates, which are also used to treat erectile dysfunction."
A recent study found that women who used sildenafil more frequently had a lower risk of developing diabetes.
The FDA said in a statement that the study was "not directly powered" to show whether a particular drug was effective in treating erectile dysfunction, but said it wanted to determine whether the drug works for women who are "at high risk" for diabetes.
Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have been approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction, Nissen said.
"These drugs are used for many years to treat ED," he added.
Levitra, which was launched in 1998, is a prescription-only drug that is available over the counter. It was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996.
The Food and Drug Administration last year recommended that doctors stop prescribing Levitra because it was associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, the FDA said.
"These drugs are not approved for use in men who have diabetes, who have a history of heart disease or who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease," the FDA said.
Nissen said he would not comment on whether he has received permission from the FDA to prescribe Cialis or Levitra.
"Any doctor who has been involved in the drug approval process should know that their patients are treated with a drug that has a lower risk of causing diabetes," Nissen said.
The FDA's letter, sent to physicians, was accompanied by a message from Dr. Michael J. Ricks, a urologist at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Dr. Ricks is chief of the urology department at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago and a professor of urology at Northwestern University. The letter is written by Dr. Michael Ricks, the lead author.
"We are very pleased with the letter that the FDA has sent to physicians and with the support of the U. Food and Drug Administration," he said.
Nissen said the FDA's warning letter to health care professionals was the first from the FDA to mention the drug.
In the letter, the FDA said the drug works well in patients with heart problems and is approved for use by both men and women.
"This is an FDA-approved use of sildenafil, which is not approved for use by men who have heart disease, angina or who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease," the FDA said.
Sildenafil is not available over the counter in the U.

The first 100 days of my journey is not to be missed, I’m here for you – not because of you, but because of me. My journey is not just about what is on my mind, but about what I am doing, because when you hear a good thing it is just a part of you. A good thing can be a very personal thing, because once you start feeling normal and you start feeling like yourself, you are just becoming normal. I am here to talk about what my journey is, and why, so that you can be in touch with what you need and when and how it will work.
When I first saw my doctor I had a very big surprise for me. My wife was pregnant and she was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension. I was really nervous because it had been six months since my last baby. But I knew something was up, and I was like ‘I think I should see my doctor right now.’
I was so excited because my doctor had prescribed Viagra, which was a little blue pill. It was prescribed by my friend, who is also a doctor, and they told me that it was the first time I had been prescribed a medication to treat my PPH, because I was so excited because it was so easy to take.
I started taking it about six months later, and I was really surprised to see that it worked. I didn’t think I was going to take it for eight months, but I was so excited, because I was so nervous.
At that point I was so excited to get my PPH done that I had to take an extra medication, but the doctor told me that Viagra is not right for me, but for a different reason. I had to take the pills on a regular basis for six months. And I wasn’t even thinking about how they should be taken on a regular basis, but I was. So I was really nervous. And I thought, ‘oh no, I am not going to be taking it,’ because I was so worried. It was so embarrassing to feel this way about my body.
The next morning I went to my doctor for a heart appointment. The doctor told me that I should take a pill with a special drug called ‘Viagra.’ I was very surprised. I was so nervous. And I was like, ‘what the hell?’ I went to my doctor and told her that it is not safe to take Viagra with a medication like that. She just didn’t understand my situation.
I was so relieved to see that Viagra works, because it has been a little bit of a breakthrough in the PPH treatment process. It is a long, very short period of time, but it is very effective. Viagra can be taken by anyone, even for short term use, for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. You can take Viagra as your next medication, and it is very simple to take.
As I got home after the appointment, I thought, ‘oh no, this is not a good thing to take! I have to go home to my doctor and tell them I am not going to be taking Viagra for six months.’ And then I was like, ‘ok, I just can’t believe this is a good thing. I have to go to my doctor again.’
So I went to my doctor and told him that Viagra is not right for me. He told me that I should take a pill with a special drug called ‘Viagra.’ So he put me on it, and it is very safe, because Viagra is safe to take, and it is a very safe drug. And I was so relieved to see that Viagra works.
